Berastagi [02/12 - 03/12]

We signed up for a 4D3N tour package to Lake Toba/Medan and it cost $525 per person (excluding the $7 tips per person per day and the airport tax of 50k rupiah during departure) with Apple Holidays (People's Park Centre). Our flight departed from Singapore at 7.30am and arrived in Medan at Indonesia time 7.55am.

The Medan Polania city airport is quite small and the planes have to berth a distance from the terminal. Passengers will have to transit onto buses to get to the terminal. After immigration, we met Hendric, who will be our tour guide for the next 4 days

Hendric told us it is a 2 hours journey to our resort from Medan. But along the way, we will stop by to have some durians and also visit the local fruit market. Thus we will arrive to our resort around lunch time. Below is a photo of Hendric explaining to us about Medan transportation.

Beyond the chaotic and haphazard town of Medan, we moved up to the highlands. Here is our first stop for the day. Each durian cost 30k rupiah (S$3.50).

We can choose between the bitter or sweet version. We decide to try the bitter version.

Thereafter, we went to visit the golden temple in Berastagi. Hendric told us the temple is newly constructed and during sunny days, it is impossible to glimpse towards the golden bright temple.

There is a very nice garden next to the temple and the weather is quite cooling. Next we proceeded to the local fruits and vegetable market. AJ was quite surprised to find horses around.

We also have barbeque corn.

There are pets, such as rabbits, dogs, for sale. Rabbits don't need to be caged. Just have to place them on high tables and they will stay put.

We proceeded onto the fruit market and saw many different types of fresh fruits. 2 big juicy oranges are going for 10k rupiah (S$1.40). In supermarket, they are usually sold for S$5. We also bought persimmons (the fruits covered in white below) for 10k rupiah.

There were many variety of vegetables.

We finished our market tour with a ride on the horse. It cost 30k rupiah (S$3.50) for a journey around the market.

Thereafter it is lunch at our resort.

We are staying at Sinabung Hills.

Our room is located at the 2nd floor, somewhere in the middle, which overlook the garden, swimming pool and the mountains in the distant.

Photobucket

Here is how our rooms look like. There is no air-conditioning as it is naturally cooling.

And from our room, we can sit by the balcony and enjoy the fresh air and nature.

The mid-day sun illuminate the distant mountains.

In the evening, we also went for a swim. The water is a bit cold though.

Photobucket

There is a large beautiful garden surrounding the pool. The large amount of empty land they have really amazes us.

Photobucket

From our balcony, we can see the sunset in the evening.

Photobucket

Besides lunch and dinner, the next day breakfast is also provided and we can dine and enjoy the scenery around.

We met up with Hendric at 8.30am and proceeded to see the waterfall - Sipiso piso. The word means knife. The story goes when one of the Dutch was flying by and saw this waterfall from the sky, it looks like a knife.

Photobucket

From there, we also have a splendid view of Lake Toba.

Thereafter, we proceed off to Parapat town for lunch. We had Chinese food.

There are a few stalls around. It is a quiet and sleepy town. The dog is also lazing on the road.
